Named for R. Howard Dobbs Jr., the building nicknamed "the DUC" includes the 1985 wing designed by John Portman and the 1927 dining hall and auditorium with its 1950 addition. The two older buildings together were called the Alumni Memorial University Center, or "AMUC."

Howard Dobbs was a member of the Board of Trustees and for two decades president and chairman of Life Insurance Company of Georgia. He made the lead gift for the building.
