William R. Cannon served as dean of the Candler School of Theology from 1953 to 1968, when he was elected a bishop of the United Methodist Church. He later served as an Emory trustee and vice chair of the Board of Trustees.

Cannon's friend U.S. President Jimmy Carter spoke at the August 1979 groundbreaking and received an honorary degree. The building was funded by a combination of resourced from the theology school, the university, and United Methodist donors.
