- Graduates from Emory with predecessor Atticus Haygood and earns Medical College of Georgia degree in two years
- Returns to Emory to teach natural sciences, Latin and English literature
- Persuades President Haygood and the trustees to introduce a department of technology, the first of its kind in Georgia; in 1884 the building now known as Hopkins Hall on the Oxford campus is constructed to house the new department
- Recruited away from Emory to become the founding president of the Georgia Institute of Technology
