Originally called Beta Hall, the East Village residence Murdy Hall is named for William Murdy, longtime Emory College professor of biology and coauthor of the Murdy-Carter Report that has guided preservation of Emory's environmental resources.

Murdy served as a transformative dean of Oxford College from 1986 to 1999.
