Young John Allen was an 1858 graduate of Emory College and served as a distinguished Methodist missionary to China, where his career included extensive translation of Chinese texts into English as well as the founding of educational institutions.
Funds were raised to construct the Allen Memorial United Methodist Church by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and by alumni and friends of the college.
