The small garden and larger wooded area south of the Oxford Road Building was designated a "Garden for Peace" and dedicated in honor of Berta T. Laney, wife of Emory President James T. Laney.

It was made possible by gifts from Laney family friends, including Gardens for Peace founder Laura Dorsey and Mariea Sibley, daughter of Emory trustee Jimmy Sibley. Gardens for Peace is an Atlanta nonprofit organization whose mission is foster environmental stewardship and peace among communities around the world through "the language of the garden."
