Part of the Freshman Village, Hamilton Holmes Hall is named for Hamilton Holmes, the first African American graduate of the Emory School of Medicine. He also was one of the first two African American students to enroll at the University of Georgia.

He later served as medical director at Grady Memorial Hospital and associate dean of the School of Medicine.
