Asa Griggs Candler founded The Coca-Cola Company and was Emory's most generous benefactor of the first half of the 20th century.

His "million-dollar letter" of July 16, 1914, set in motion the founding of Emory University in DeKalb County and the move of Emory College to Atlanta from Oxford. He gave the funds for construction of the library named for him.
