Founders, Volunteer Emory

Debbie Genzer and Wendy Rosenberg NadelSorority sisters Debbie Genzer and Wendy Nadel founded Volunteer Emory in 1980 as sophomores, creating a centralized vehicle through which Emory students could find and pursue service opportunities in the greater Atlanta community. Working closely with the United Way of Atlanta, Volunteer Emory focused on individual volunteer placements and became the first United Way branch on a college campus.

It remains a student-led organization; 15 to 25 student staff members spearhead weekly service trips, organize large service days, and plan awareness campaigns for the Emory community.

Now on separate coasts but continuing a legacy of nonprofit service, Nadel is executive director of Yonkers (N.Y.) Partners in Education while Genzer works as a senior court services analyst for the Judicial Council of California, Administrative Office of the Courts.
