James R. Gavin
Physician; Expert on Diabetes
An expert in diabetes and childhood obesity, James R. Gavin chairs the board of directors for Partnership for a Healthier America, which is instrumental in First Lady Michele Obama's campaign against childhood obesity.
He holds joint clinical appointments as professor of medicine at Emory School of Medicine and Indiana University School of Medicine. Gavin was president of Morehouse School of Medicine from 2002 to 2004 and served as senior scientific officer at Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) for more than a decade. Before joining the senior staff of HHMI, he was on the faculty at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and chief of the Section on Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Hypertension, and William K. Warren Professor for Diabetes Studies.
He has been a member of Emory's Board of Trustees since 2003.
