Julia Voorhees Emmons
Executive Director, Atlanta Track Club
Runners in the Peachtree Road Race would have a hard time keeping pace with Julia Voorhees Emmons.
Best known as the twenty-two-year director of the annual July 4th race and as executive director of its sponsoring Atlanta Track Club, Emmons traces her Atlanta roots back to her days as an associate professor in Emory's Division of Library and Information Science. Held in high esteem in the track world, she was the first woman to direct the men's and women's marathons at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. In 2005 she was elected into Running USA's Hall of Champions, and she has been inducted into Emory's Sports Hall of Fame as well.
In 2006, the year she retired from the Atlanta Track Club, the former Atlanta City Council member received the city's highest honor, the Phoenix Award. She remains active in a variety of civic endeavors.
