R. Howard Dobbs Jr.
Atlanta Businessman; Emory Trustee; Philanthropist
R. Howard Dobbs Jr. was born in Atlanta in 1906. He began his career at the Life Insurance Company of Georgia in 1925 and, after holding several positions within the company, served as president and chief executive officer from 1948 to 1970. He then served as chair of the executive committee until he retired in 1976.
His dedication to business was complemented by his deep commitment to the city. An active civic volunteer, Dobbs served as president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Atlanta Rotary Club, and trustee of Emory, Young Harris College, Agnes Scott College, and Woodward Academy.
He valued education and was gratified that the Dobbs University Center, made possible by his donation, serves as the heart of Emory campus life.
